Joseph A. Maddox (or Joseph A. Mattox) - 3d Sgt. 9/26/1861. Appointed 1st Sgt. June 28, 1862. Wounded at Wilderness, Va. May 5, 1864. Died of pneumonia in General Receiving Hospital (Charity Hospital) at Gordonsville, Va. December 17, 1864.

Died at the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital (Exchange Hotel) The Confederate dead, initially buried near the hospital, were moved to the Maplewood cemetery. The Exchange Hotel is still standing at Gordonsville and today is a museum. There is a memorial marker at the cemetery marking the graves of over 700 CSA soldiers at Maplewood Cemetery.
